Truth vs FamiLIAR

“Then you will know the truth and the truth will set you free.” John 8:32 NIV

I was with a friend recently who asked me a very good question. She was feeling discouraged about something that kept repeating in her life. She understood that the lies the enemy had planted in her mind were not the truth about her identity, but somehow, she just couldn’t get them to stop revisiting and wanted to know why.

This is a good question.

First, we must understand that we are in a battle each day and that we do not wrestle against flesh and blood. We are warriors, in a war. So instead of looking at this as a failure of our faith somehow, we simply need to wake up to the Word that says “His weapons are MIGHTY at pulling down those strongholds” We partner with God, we are instructed to put our full armor on daily. Half of the battle is knowing this and that we can trust our Commander, to listen & obey Him daily.

Second, we must understand that what we are resisting things that may have been with us for a long time. These thoughts, lies, become a part of our life. We get so use to them that they begin to feel normal. UNTIL we allow the Holy Spirit to show us the lies and reveal the truth to us. Once exposed and uprooted, we must resist them from revisiting.

Have you ever driven somewhere and had the thought “this place seems very familiar, but Im not sure if I’ve been here before?”

This is what its like when we leave a reoccurring LIE that wants to revisit our mind.. It can feel like they belong there because its familiar. Did you know that at the end of the word familiar is the word LIAR! WOW! We must not be deceived by the enemy. Just because it seems familiar, doesn’t mean it’s the truth of our identity in Christ. We must listen to the voice of Truth and allow Him to guard and guide us out of these places.

I want to give you more critical understanding on how lies about our identity can effect our life in a very negative way. The Bible calls the enemy the “father of lies”

Below is a portion from my book The Encounter Experience, called “Lies & Ties” in Chapter 4-Set Free, followed by a time of activation & prayer:

Lies & Ties

There is a tie behind every lie from the enemy that we believe in our mind. Personal or family sins, words spoken over us, or any type of trauma can ALL welcome negative attachments into our lives. They are the reason we feel stuck, spinning our wheels in mud in specific areas. I like to describe these attachments like hooks. Picture a fishhook with a line attached. The hook, (stronghold) is connected so deep into our thoughts, memories and soul that they can greatly affect how we make decisions, experience life and our relationships. The enemy knows every one of these hooks and will pull on the strings attached so we experience the pain and shame repeatedly until freedom occurs.

When we believe the lies of the enemy, we move into agreement with him, which is like entering a spiritual contract that gives him the right to hold us captive in this place. Do you see how important it is for us to sever the attachment of this lie, the stronghold—this agreement with the enemy?

“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” John 10:10 NIV

The enemy has his mission for our life and he doesn’t fight fair. He comes to us in the way of deception. He paints us a picture that portrays what he is showing as the better way. It’s been going on since the Garden of Eden. Thank God for His plan of redemption through Jesus. He became the Word and the Truth for us to believe and hold onto in the place of every single lie the enemy brings. The ties and lies simply need to be exposed, severed and replaced with the truth, in Jesus Name.

“Then you will know the truth and the truth will set you free.” John 8:32 NIV
